May 30, 2005 · OM617.952 fuel economy. I turned back my ALDA to original spec and got 22.55MPG. With 1 full turn CCW I got 23MPG (lowest), sometimes 24, sometimes 25. I wonder how my turbodiesel fares with your turbodiesel (W123 only) in terms of fuel economy. Any other things I could do to increase fuel mileage? Best I could do was 27MPG. For gasoline engines, some sort of variable valve timing is highly desirable, and fuel injection mandatory. For diesels, mechanical injection is preferable to reduce complexity inherent in the wiring of CRDs. The 4BT will get better mileage. It will not have to work as hard as the OM617. I average 15 in very mixed driving over the last year with my OM617 FJ40So after some minor research it appears the OM617 produces at least 40 more ft/lbs of torque and at least 30 more horse power than the Jeep 2.5l. It also produces this torque at a much lower rpm than the 2.5. Had my 88 MJ since august of 18 and put a lot of work in it making it my own. Added a RC 4.5 lift and their steering stabilized, and added new 15” method wheels and new 31” MT tires. That extra 5" is big as the OM617/transmission transfer case measures 70", which is really pushing the envelope lengthwise as far as squeezing it into an FJ40 with a 90" wheelbase.
