It pays off to get on good relations with the elders for more recruit slots in the villages. :) (hint: they are rare :D ) Also you can theoretically upgrade Bandit Units into said Elite Units, using the disciplinary skill. Honestly, aside from the few truly outstanding troops like Fian Champs, Khan's Guard etc., most factions have a roster that performs well enough to get the job done and trying to maintain an army of "best of the best" troops from all corners of the world often isn't worth the effort, or even feasible once you have fiefs to defend..
